Museum of Toronto (formerly Myseum) is a not-for-profit charitable organization founded in 2014. Through our exhibitions, community pop-ups and online programming, we connect Torontonians to the city and to each other. For over a decade, we have defined how Toronto communities tell, share, and learn about our unique and ever-evolving city through our histories and aspirations for the future.
Philanthropy is vital to our sustainability and future growth, ensuring we meet our ultimate vision to build a permanent home for the Museum. As Director of Development, you will have the opportunity to continue to instill a culture of philanthropy and individual giving, aligning with one of our strategic objectives to diversify our revenues. Reporting to the Executive Director and working closely with the senior management team and Board of Directors ,you will identify prospects, design compelling proposals, steward donors and secure gifts to meet our annual fundraising revenue goal.
Responsibilities:
- As a member of the Senior Team, the Director of Development will participate in the planning and implementation of the Museum’s organizational strategy
- Lead across all areas of fundraising - including, but not exclusive to, individual giving, major gifts, corporate sponsorships, foundations and government grants
- Carry out the primary focus of growing and sustaining a portfolio of key donor prospects, developing cultivation and stewardship strategies, and working in concert with the Executive Director
- Provide leadership and act as a lead contributor in individual giving activities - growing revenues and an annual communication plan
- Provide support and guidance to the Board of Directors, engaging their networks and leveraging their insights to advance the organization’s philanthropic goals
- In collaboration with the ED, set annual fundraising targets and KPI's tied to the strategic goals. Work closely with the Senior Team to ensure that the plan and metrics are understood and worked on collaboratively
- Craft compelling cases for support to solicit funding for key priority projects. Research and lead outreach to all prospective donors, sponsors and funders
- Work in concert with the Director of Marketing & Operations to increase brand awareness across professional advisors and specific donor market segments and in the wider community
- Work collaboratively with the Director of Marketing and Operations, ensuring updates, adequate briefs and detailed information flows so that all activities are rigorously conceptualized and supported
- Support the organization and the ED in building and deepening governmental relationships
- Provide regular updates to the ED and senior team on activity and success in fundraising deliverables
- Lead, by example, as a senior member of the Museum team, coaching and mentoring, and motivating staff to achieve goals and to work well together
- Work collaboratively and closely with the senior team, and across the organization to leverage colleague’s expertise and advance philanthropic opportunities
- Foster a culture of teamwork and synergy across departments to maximize impact and mentor colleagues on ensuring fundraising is integrated into our work
Skill Requirements
- 5+ years of fundraising management experience, preferably in an arts, culture or civic-focused organization
- Demonstrated success in securing, preparing and executing Major Gifts of $1M+
- Proven track record of achieving income growth and surpassing ambitious fundraising goals, coupled with genuine interest in Toronto and civic history
- Demonstrated success in building a digital fundraising campaigns
- Excellent communication, attentive listening, and outstanding interpersonal skills, along with the ability to craft compelling narratives to captivate the hearts and minds of donors throughout the philanthropic journey
- Relevant experience leading fundraising growth strategies, teams and donor relationships
- Exceptional interpersonal skills, attention to detail and a strong methodical approach to planning and execution
- Post-secondary degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- A combination of skills and experience will be considered
- CFRE, or other development designations considered an asset
Conditions of Employment
This is a full-time, hybrid position. Occasional evening work can be anticipated in relation to Museum events, with a time-in-lieu system in place.
Following a three-month probationary period, employees receive a health and dental benefits program.

Compensation
$85,000.00 - $99,995.00 per year
