Museum of Toronto (formerly Myseum) is a not-for-profit charitable organization founded in
2014. We connect Torontonians to the city and to each other. For over a decade, we have
defined how Toronto communities tell, share, and learn about our unique and ever-evolving
city through our histories and aspirations for the future.

POSITION SUMMARY:
Reporting to the Executive Director, this newly created leadership position is a member of
the Senior Team and is responsible for overall business, administrative, and operational
management of the organization. This includes leadership and oversight in the areas of
financial management, facilities, HR, board relations, and marketing.. The Managing
Director collaborates with the Executive Director and the Board to drive long-range
planning and articulate strategic goals for the organization.They will work closely with the
ED to ensure there are suitable operational processes for finance, people management
and adequate support for fundraising.

You are a gifted communicator with past experience leading the operations and business
strategy of a non-profit organization and possess the entrepreneurial spirit needed to
quickly adapt to an evolving and growing museum. The successful candidate will have a
deep passion for our city and an understanding of working with diverse stakeholders and
communities. They should possess deep experience building an organizational brand
through multiple traditional and non-traditional channels, within private and non-profit
sectors. They are an experienced mentor with a record of supporting individual
professional growth in the arts and culture sector, and someone with a deep commitment
to building a financially sustainable organization.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
Organizational Leadership:
● Provide strategic counsel and support to the ED and support the process of
operationalizing MoTO’s growth plans
● Develop and implement a cost-effective operational strategy, process and plans that
support the growth and manage the day-to-day operations of the organization
● Set long and short-term goals for the organization and develop methods to monitor and
evaluate progress and celebrate achievement
● Ensure the engagement, empowerment, and support of all staff and foster a work
culture that is steeped in MoTO’s core values
● Oversee the hiring and training processes of staff and build professional development
into team members’ time to encourage learning and growth
● Lead and manage the organization’s annual performance appraisal process and ensure
professional development activities are supported
● In collaboration with the senior team, assess and periodically update human resource
policies, decisions and practices to strengthen internal work culture
● Work with ED and Senior team to ensure all relationships with shareholders, business
partners and authorities are long-term and trusting
● Liaise with building management, and oversee museum facilities and maintenance as
required
● Along with the Executive Director, represent Museum of Toronto in the local and national
arts and culture community, including interfacing with key government and funding bodies

Revenue Development:
● Partner with the Director of Development to implement strategies that will increase
earned and contributed revenue. Identify and pursue income from potential new revenue
sources
● Actively collaborate with the Executive Director, Board, and Direct of Development in
securing adequate resources for MoTO, by participating in donor cultivation, stewardship,
and solicitations, including frequent interactions with donors, institutional funders, as
needed
● Support the development of new audience development, marketing, and fundraising
initiatives

Marketing & Visitor Experience:
● Lead, oversee and implement all brand marketing and exhibition activities and act as the
brand and messaging steward for the organization
● Work in tandem with the Director of Digital Programming to oversee the delivery of
content to support all digital platforms
● Lead and oversee the development and management of the visitor journey to support
visitor engagement and retention
● Lead the Museum’s benchmarking audience research study and develop a plan to
ensure consistent gathering of visitor data
● Manage external agencies and vendors. Provide oversight and ensure that they are
accountable
● Manage the collection and reporting of marketing and visitor data/metrics

Finances & Budgeting:
● Ensure financial stability through prudent fiscal management, measured accountability,
and long-term financial planning
● In collaboration with the Executive Director, monitor progress toward earned revenue
goals and expense projections for individual productions and the overall season
● Prepare and present financial updates for the organization on an ongoing basis to the
Finance Committee, the Full Board, and other stakeholders
● Work in tandem with the Executive Director and other senior members to create annual
budgets, identify long-term financial plans and forecasts and maintain a culture of financial
discipline
● Review and modify operations and budgets to reflect changes in financial circumstances
and meet regulatory frameworks
● Anticipate and plan for maintenance projects and capital improvements

Community Engagement:
● Act as a strategic partner and advocate for strengthening and sustaining the Museum’s
community engagement programs
● Enhance MoTO’s presence and impact within the broader cultural and theatrical
ecosystem

QUALIFICATIONS:
● Minimum of 7 years of experience in a senior management role, preferably within
the non-profit sector
● Proven track record of successful leadership and team management
● Excellent interpersonal skills and team leadership skills
● Ability to develop and implement strategic plans
● Exceptional verbal and written communication skills, focusing on collaborative
planning and integration across an organization
● Strategic and creative thinker
● Entrepreneurial spirit and ability to be nimble and responsive
● Strong problem-solving and decision-making abilities
● Knowledge of budget creation and oversight
● Ability to operate flexibly and consultatively, accommodating the varying demands
of multiple concurrent projects
● Demonstrated ability to engage with communities from diverse cultural and
socio-economic backgrounds in project consultations
● Experience in budget management and financial analysis
● Knowledge of industry trends and best practices
● Bachelor's degree in history, english or related field
● Master's degree preferred
● Excellent analytical and critical thinking abilities
● Ability to work well under pressure and meet deadlines
● Exceptional organizational skills

Some weekend and after-hours work is required to align with program needs. Flexibility
required.

Compensation

$100,000.00 - $120,000.00 per year
